Energy minister encourages households to take up 'green grants'

The UK's energy minister has encouraged households and businesses in the UK to apply for 'green' grants through the government's Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

Malcolm Wicks made the call after announcing that since April 2006, £25 million-worth of funding has been issued to schools, companies and homeowners looking to install solar panels, biomass boilers and heat pumps on their sites.

Speaking about the scheme, the MP said that it was "vital" that the public match the action taken by world governments on the issue of climate change and apply for the grants.

He added: "Deciding to go green and generate your own clean energy is one of the most valuable new year's resolutions you can make.

"There are still grants available to householders who want to follow in the footsteps of the thousands across the UK who have been helped by the government to fit microgeneration technology at their homes."

Mr Wicks' comments on the initiative have come after the Scottish National Party's energy spokesperson, Mike Weir, urged the UK government to force energy suppliers to cut energy prices for low-income families and pensioners.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18409870-ADNFCR
